A Kubernetes bill lists machines, disks and network services, but it may not tell you which application or team caused the spending. Cost allocation connects that shared infrastructure cost to workloads. It helps answer two different questions: who should be charged, and what could be changed to spend less?

What a Kubernetes cost tool does

OpenCost measures and allocates Kubernetes infrastructure costs. A cloud billing system records the provider's actual charges. Use both when you need to connect workload usage to the final bill: allocation estimates need assumptions about pricing, idle resources and shared services, so they do not automatically match an invoice.

Start with cost allocation when you cannot explain which namespaces or applications use capacity. Use resource measurements to identify oversized requests or idle machines, then consider workload and node scaling. Check performance and recovery before removing spare capacity. A cheaper-looking allocation is not a saving if the same cloud resources remain billed.
