You want a lab machine that another person can recreate without following a long list of manual setup steps. Vagrant manages development environments from a Vagrantfile that describes the machine and its setup.
A provider supplies the virtualization system, and a box is a packaged starting image. Choose Vagrant when a repeatable virtual-machine environment fits the exercise. Check that the provider and box support your host architecture; a box built for an x86 machine may not run on an ARM laptop. The hosted-box service changes below are separate from the local CLI.
Try it in a lab
Create a small guest with a supported provider. Record the box, provider and guest versions. Bring it up, connect, make a disposable change and recreate it from the same definition.
Check where the box is hosted. HashiCorp has ended new HCP Vagrant box and registry creation as of October 1, 2026, with support ending November 2 and hosted operations ending December 31, 2026. The Vagrant community CLI remains available for local and independently hosted boxes. If the exercise depends on HCP Vagrant, preserve or replace that box source and verify that the guest can be recreated from its new location.
Check your understanding
Explain which state lives in the guest and which lives in a shared host directory. Verify that recreation restores the intended environment without relying on an undocumented manual step.
Before you start
Shared directories and forwarded ports cross the boundary between host and guest. Avoid mounting sensitive host directories into an untrusted box.
Read the official guide
Use the project documentation for version-specific commands and prerequisites. Record the versions and results of your own exercise. This page proposes a learning activity; it does not report a Kubedex test.
This is a newly written study reference at an address from the original Kubedex course outline. The original lesson was not recovered. It does not include course enrolment, progress tracking or a certificate.
