Project reference ↗

People often need answers from business data without asking a developer to build a separate report each time. Metabase connects to databases and provides an interface for asking questions, showing charts and sharing dashboards. Analysts can also work with SQL where appropriate. The business records stay in the connected data sources, while Metabase stores its own questions, dashboards and settings in a separate application database that also needs protection.

Current guidance

Metabase’s official container guide distinguishes the Open Source image from the Pro/Enterprise image. It also warns that the embedded H2 application database in a disposable container is not an appropriate production setup. Questions, dashboards, collections and configuration can be lost even when the underlying business database remains intact.

Provision a supported application database and preserve its credentials and backups independently of analytics-source connections. If moving from H2, follow Metabase’s documented migration process rather than pointing the new container at an empty PostgreSQL database and expecting the old dashboards to appear.

Use appropriately restricted credentials for queried data sources and review what users can access through saved questions, SQL and public sharing. Test an upgrade against a restored application database, including custom drivers, scheduled delivery and authentication. Pin the selected image and verify its edition requirements. A running web interface is not evidence that metadata is durable or that all query permissions are correct; this review did not execute an application upgrade.
