Ghost gives writers and publishers a web application for creating articles and operating an online publication. It manages the published content and presentation, with membership and newsletter workflows where configured. It is useful when publishing is the main job rather than building a general-purpose application. Hosting it on Kubernetes still means preserving the database, images and themes, along with the mail and member settings that make the publication work.
Deployment and operating notes
Ghost’s current database FAQ says MySQL 8 is the supported production database and provides migration guidance from MariaDB and SQLite. This directly changes the old chart’s bundled MariaDB assumption. Ghost also documents a Docker deployment route currently labeled preview; that does not certify the retired stable chart or a third-party Kubernetes package.
Inventory Ghost version, Node runtime, database, content directory, themes, members, mail settings and external storage adapters before upgrading. Preserve the database and content together, and test a restored copy before changing either packaging or database engine. Verify publishing, images, theme rendering, member login and newsletter delivery in a controlled environment. Avoid sending real newsletters during a migration rehearsal. Check the documented major-version sequence and theme compatibility rather than jumping directly from a years-old image. Keep the pre-upgrade database and content snapshot for rollback because a newer Ghost process may modify schema or stored content in ways an older image cannot safely read.
