k6 generates a defined workload against an application and measures how it responds. Test scripts describe user actions or API requests, while thresholds turn goals such as acceptable latency and error rate into pass-or-fail results. It is useful for comparing a change with a baseline or testing behavior under expected demand. Generating more traffic is not automatically a better test: the scenario and the load generator's own limits determine what the result means.

Current guidance

k6 runs scripted load tests, while the k6 Operator coordinates Kubernetes TestRun resources and worker jobs. Grafana Cloud is another service option. Keep those components and their support boundaries distinct rather than treating the historical k6 directory entry as a promise about a particular hosted or operator deployment.

The upstream thresholds guide distinguishes measurable pass/fail criteria from merely collecting metrics. Define error-rate and latency objectives for representative transactions, and ensure the process exit status fails automation when those thresholds are missed. A test that returns HTTP 200 without checking response meaning can still measure a broken application.

Use the operator when multiple generators or Kubernetes execution are actually required. Confirm total offered load, per-worker resource limits, data uniqueness and result aggregation so generator saturation does not masquerade as application capacity. Run only against authorized test targets, and control secrets and test data supplied to worker pods. Compare a baseline and changed application under the same scenario before interpreting a regression. No benchmark numbers or deployed operator compatibility are asserted by this source review.
