Kubeapps gives users a browser-based way to find application packages and install or manage them in Kubernetes. It can be useful when teams want an application catalog and deployment interface instead of requiring everyone to use Helm commands directly. Access to repositories, credentials and existing releases still needs clear ownership. The original VMware project is archived, and its recommended SAP fork has a defined upkeep scope rather than guaranteed parity with every historical integration.
Current guidance
The original VMware Kubeapps repository is archived; upstream recommends the SAP fork, which describes its scope as essential upkeep.
Review the fork's package source, maintained features and security/update policy rather than assuming identical integrations. SAP has removed the Carvel/kapp_controller plugin, so a deployment that relies on Carvel cannot assume feature parity with this fork. New feature development is not guaranteed. The original chart or image location may no longer be the correct choice.
Test authentication, repository credentials, package browsing and release ownership in the target version. Keep access to releases through supported tooling outside the UI so a dashboard outage does not prevent operations.
Historical upstream link check · 2026-10-09
The recorded upstream address redirects to https://github.com/vmware-tanzu/kubeapps and returned HTTP 200 on 2026-10-09. GitHub marks vmware-tanzu/kubeapps as archived. This confirms the repository's read-only archive state; any successor or supported distribution needs separate evidence. GitHub resolves the old repository identity to vmware-tanzu/kubeapps. Link availability does not certify the historical installation instructions or current security support.
Website availability is separate from project, chart and image support. Use the current guidance and primary sources on this page to assess the distribution.
