If an application is organized around small handlers for requests or events, OpenFaaS provides a platform for packaging and running those handlers as container-based functions. It supplies the surrounding invocation and management components so teams can focus on function code. Deployment choices include Kubernetes and the single-host faasd approach. Triggers, scaling behavior and licensing depend on the selected edition, so establish those requirements before assuming an older example describes the platform you can deploy today.
Current guidance
OpenFaaS’s current deployment guide separates commercially licensed Standard/Enterprise offerings from Community Edition. It states that Community Edition is intended for personal use and has a 60-day commercial-use limit. Review the terms for the exact binaries and edition instead of assuming that historical open-source examples grant unrestricted current production use.
The guide distinguishes Kubernetes-based deployments from the single-host faasd approach. Select a deployment and edition that supplies the required triggers, scaling and tenancy behavior, and verify image architecture and runtime compatibility. Packaging a process as a function does not make its state, filesystem or network dependencies automatically portable.
Protect gateway credentials and configure TLS for public access. Test request timeouts, asynchronous retries, authentication and registry access with a bounded function, and keep secrets separate from the image. Pin templates and base images as well as the platform release so builds can be reproduced. This review establishes current upstream deployment and edition boundaries, not a legal interpretation, an installation test or a guarantee that every historical Docker Swarm or Windows claim applies today.
Historical upstream link check · 2026-10-09
The recorded upstream address responded successfully (HTTP 200) on 2026-10-09. GitHub does not mark openfaas/faas-netes archived or disabled; this does not establish active maintenance, support or compatibility. Link availability does not certify the historical installation instructions or current security support.

OpenFaaS (Functions as a Service) is a framework for building serverless functions with Docker and Kubernetes which has first class support for metrics. Any process can be packaged as a function enabling you to consume a range of web events without repetitive boiler-plate coding.
Highlights
- Ease of use through UI portal and one-click install
- Write functions in any language for Linux or Windows and package in Docker/OCI image format
- Portable – runs on existing hardware or public/private cloud – Kubernetes and Docker Swarm native
- CLI available with YAML format for templating and defining functions
- Auto-scales as demand increases
- Compatible with Istio mTLS (all health checks are done with exec wget)
